Inside TestMonitor: The Convenience of Uploading Test Scripts
It doesn’t matter how long you have been involved in software development; the testing phase always seems to have unique challenges every time.
The important thing, however, is to leverage best practices, learn from your mistakes, and take advantage of the industry-leading test management tools that are made to make the entire process easier. That’s how TestMonitor is developed, from the ground up.
In fact, of the many features highlighted by test managers one of the most common is TestMonitor’s ability to make importing test scripts simple.
So why is that important for software testing and how easy is it to do in TestMonitor?
Why is uploading test scripts important to your software testing?
Whether your organization already has a library of pre-existing test scripts or if you are compiling them from a variety of sources, the last thing you want to have to do is slow down your testing phase and rewrite them into a test management tool. Not only does this open up the opportunity for mistakes, but it is also time consuming.
However, with industry-leading test management tools, you can easily import your test scripts and immediately begin to organize them into test runs, assign them to your testers, and have an intuitive method to track successes and failures of your software testing. At the same time, with all of your test scripts in an automated environment, it's a lot easier to track the overall testing status, escalate issues to owners, and ensure consistency and alignment with best practices or organizational templates via a test case library.
How to upload test scripts within TestMonitor
So when we say the process of uploading test scripts with TestMonitor is simple, we mean it; there are only three intuitive steps to follow:
Upload
With TestMonitor’s test case import features, you can upload as many test scripts as you need. Just prepare the spreadsheet or CSV file with the required and optional columns, noted below, and click the “Upload” button or drop the file into the interface.
The required and optional fields include:
- Name (required)
- Instructions (required)
- Preconditions (optional)
- Expected Result (optional)
- Test Data (optional)
- Duration (optional)
Map
With your original test scripts successfully uploaded to the TestMonitor import wizard, you then use the drop-down options to map the column from your original source file to the correct column in TestMonitor.
During the mapping process, you can preview how your scripts will appear in TestMonitor or skip a column from the original file, if it is not needed.
Confirm
With the columns imported and mapped, you then click “Finish” to complete the import job. When the import process finishes, you will receive an email message with the confirmation. If there are any errors, the specific row and cause of the import issue will be listed.
The original source file for the import will also be stored in the “Imports” section on the TestMonitor overview page for future reference, along with any other imported test script files.
Other benefits of managing your test scripts within TestMonitor
So why is it important for your team to use a test management tool with the ability to import test scripts for your software testing?
- A test management tool eliminates the need to manage and store multiple spreadsheets, especially during the drafting stage when there can be multiple versions
- All current and past test scripts will be stored in one place, complete with the ability to link them to requirements and issues for remediation during and after software testing
- Your testing team can get up to speed faster and begin testing within minutes using templates, prepopulated test scripts, or by uploading new test scripts via the import process
- Once testing is underway, the test management tool will make keeping track of overall testing status easier, help with the generation of data-rich, customizable reports, and keep a comprehensive log of tester actions.
